Since John A. Scheibel founded Scheibel Construction in 1946, the company has grown from its first project (a service station in Washington, D.C.) to a leading general contractor in the Washington D.C. metropolitan region. As the company evolved, the corporate philosophy was established to work hard, give an honest effort, a competitive price, and develop a superior product.

The Beginning: John A. Scheibel

In 1924, John A. (Rudy) Scheibel moved to Philadelphia and advanced his career with McCloskey & Company, becoming lead superintendent. He managed major projects like the National Archives Building and St. Albans Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

1940s: Founding the Company

After working for Charles H. Thompkins Construction, Scheibel founded John A. Scheibel, Inc. in 1946, focusing on home repairs and gas station construction throughout Washington, D.C., with expertise in concrete and masonry.

Citizens Bank Construction

1950s: Growth with Family

In 1950, Charles R. Bailey and wife Kay Bailey (‘nee Scheibel), Scheibel’s son-in-law, joined the company. Together, they expanded into small commercial projects and developed a relationship with Citizens Bank, constructing bank branches across Maryland.

1960s: Expanding into Government Work

Scheibel Construction completed local government projects, including the Prince George’s County Health Department. They also began federal government work, including military projects. In 1968, Rudy Scheibel retired, and Charles R. Bailey and his wife, Kay, took ownership of the company.

1970s: Moving into Healthcare

The company entered the healthcare sector with projects like the Cancer Research Center at Howard University and renovations at Malcolm Grow Hospital. They also installed some of the first MRI facilities for General Electric and continued expanding federal contracts.

1980s: Government and Classified Projects

Scheibel managed significant government contracts, including the DNA Casino Facility and the Special Missions Hangar at Joint Base Andrews. John R. Bailey and wife Jerrie L. Bailey joined the company in 1982 and later bought it in 1996, continuing the focus on healthcare, retail, and government work.

1990s: Education and Market Expansion

The company entered the education sector, completing more schools in Southern Maryland than any other contractor. They also took on projects in fast food, retail, assisted living, and religious facilities, while continuing healthcare and government work.

2000-2010s: New Markets and Innovation

In 2009 and 2010, Robbie Bailey and Kristen Bailey Doty joined the company. Under fourth-generation leadership, Scheibel expanded its portfolio to meet evolving industry needs. The company maintained strong performance in education and healthcare while exploring new opportunities to drive future success.
